Counselling in essence is the art of helping a person in distress who may be unable to mentally, emotionally, physically cope with stress. Counselling enables a person to get in touch with their own feelings, the real feelings and not the projected feelings which one thinks it ought to be. Counselling in today’s fast paced world has become the need of the hour in the western world where countries like the United States of America, United Kingdom, Australia all understand and propagate the importance of having a counsellor or ‘a shrink’ as they are commonly known. Counselling is not advice giving or suggesting, it is merely a platform built by the counsellor and the client together to solve the client’s problem in a self- directive and constructive way.In a world that works 24*7, stress is an inevitable outcome and is privy to all sections, be it the children in schools to housewives at home, or employees in multinational corporations to elderly persons living alone or in old age homes. Some are able to de-stress themselves through activities of playing outdoor games, colouring, and playing imaginative games for children. Adults cope with stress in a different manner and their coping might vary from healthy to unhealthy coping tactics such as exercising which is a healthy coping activity, but smoking or drinking alcohol to de-stress oneself can be understood as a negative coping strategy.
